Controversial hemp farmer Ulf Hammarsten of Sweden, has been awarded an environmental prize by officials Laholm for fighting all the way to the EU (European Union) courts against the ban on the cultivation of industrial hemp.
When Hammarsten first began growing hemp seven years ago, police raided his farm and dug up all his plants.
Hammarsten then faced criminal charges for drug offences. However, he stuck to his guns and eventually won the right to grow hemp after he defeated the Swedish authorities in a European Union court case.
"It became clear to me quite early that this was an environmentally friendly crop that cleanses the earth. Hemp sucks up substances that destroy the soil such as industrial fertilizer and pesticides," says Hammarsten.
The Laholm farmer's court victory spelled the end of a 30 year ban on the cultivation of industrial hemp. While hemp is more often known as cannabis, marijuana or pot and used as a drug - usually smoked in a joint, bong or pipe, the industrial uses of hemp include the production of paper, food oil, fuel, paint, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals and is extremely low in THC making it practically useless for smoking purposes.
Hemp also grows quickly and is easy to harvest.
