The poll released by Hunter College in New York, shows Barack Obama trailing by a significant gap in second with 22 percent supporting the Illinois senator.
Of the 768 gay and lesbian respondents a large majority say they will vote democrat showing more than six to one support over the republicans.
The small number of republican voters polled showed 50 percent in support of Mayor Rudolph Giuliani with John McCain in second at 23 percent.
The poll, said the New York Times, covers new ground by gauging “matters of sex and identity and how those issues are connected or disconnected with political views.”
Roughly one third of the respondents, according to the paper, said they became more liberal after coming out. 33 percent of respondents said they were very interested in politics, compared with just 22 percent of the general population.
