James Sewell Ballet Announces Holiday Performances

James Sewell Ballet will present its annual holiday production of "Amahl and the Night Visitors," Dec. 21-22, at The O'Shaughnessy in St. Paul.

"Amahl" is a one-act opera by Gian Carlo Menotti composed for NBC-TV in 1951. It tells the heart-warming story of a little boy, his widowed mother, and the extraordinary night they were visited by the Three Kings on their star-guided journey to Bethlehem.

The dancers dramatize the story with several choreographic styles, including ballet en pointe. The production also incorporates American Sign Language as an integral part of the choreography to further express the poetic libretto.

The 50-minute story and its themes of faith, forgiveness, healing, and compassion have resonated with Minnesota audiences since 1995.

Beginning 30 minutes prior to all performances, living dioramas of multicultural giving traditions will be on display in the O'Shaughnessy lobby.

Two evening performances, Friday, Dec. 21, will begin at 6pm and 8pm.

Two matinees on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 22, will begin at 1pm and 3pm.

A special, First Chance Dance performance for all ages will be presented on Saturday morning, Dec. 22, beginning at 11am. First Chance performances are distinguished by their informality; by one general admission price for all tickets, with ages 3 and under free; and by house lights remaining partially illuminated so that patrons may exit and re-enter the theater as needed.

The O'Shaughnessy is located on the campus of the College of St. Catherine, 2004 Randolph Avenue (between Cleveland and Fairview), St. Paul.

All First Chance Dance tickets are $10, general admission, with ages 3 and under attending for free.

This activity is made possible in part by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

James Sewell Ballet's 2007-08 season is supported by Ameriprise Financial and TARGET. -- www.jsballet.org
