We are profoundly saddened to learn of the death of our missing student, Latasha Norman. It is a tragedy we had hoped would not come to pass, and the Jackson State University family is devastated by this latest development.
I want to extend my deepest and most profound sympathy to the Norman/Bolden family, Latasha's friends and others who loved her. There are simply no words that can take away the anguish I know you must feel in the face of such a heinous and senseless act. But I want you to know that we at Jackson State University, as well as countless others who prayed for her safe return, mourn with you.
I want to assure you that our Jackson State Department of Public Safety, as well as several other agencies, including the Jackson Police Department, Hinds County Sheriff's Department and FBI, are continuing to work tirelessly to bring the person responsible for Latasha's death to justice. We thank them for their diligence and hard work and ask that you join us in supporting them as they continue in those efforts. I'd especially like to commend Chief Rebecca Coleman, who heads the Jackson State University Department of Public Safety. She got involved in this from the beginning and never, ever let it go.
The university is offering counseling for our students, faculty and staff. We urge those needing assistance in dealing with this incomprehensible act to please seek out those counselors. All classes have been cancelled Friday. Classes will resume Monday. A memorial service will be held at noon Monday in the Rose Embly McCoy Auditorium.
Though no one can be completely safe from individual acts of violence, I want to take this time to reassure the students, parents, faculty and staff that we will continue to work hard to ensure a safe and secure campus environment. - JSU News
