Singapore Orchestra Celebrates Its Birthday

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 29th birthday with a concert showcasing some of the best-loved classics alongside rare musical treasures on January 12.

While young Singaporean violinist Grace Lee will play the virtuosic solo part in Ravel’s Tzigane, SSO Principal Bassoon Zhang Jin Min will take centrestage in two rarely heard works for bassoon - Weber’s Andante and Rondo ongarese and Elgar’s Romance, a piece that portrays the bassoon as poet and singer.

Led by Lan Shui, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra will also perform Mendelssohn’s most popular symphony – the Italian (or Symphony No. 4) – which captures the many moods of a tourist wandering across colourful Italy, as well as Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite which marked the turning point in his career and featured Stravinsky’s signature use of modern harmonies and rhythmic modification. -- www.sso.org.sg
