Marvin Hamlisch To Conduct Milwaukee Orchestra

Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra President and Executive Director Mark C. Hanson announced today that Marvin Hamlisch will become the Stein Family Foundation Principal Pops Conductor effective immediately. As Principal Pops Conductor, Mr. Hamlisch will lead 2 programs during the MSO’s 50th anniversary season (2008/09) and 3 programs during the 2009/10 season.

Mr. Hamlisch, winner of virtually every entertainment award—Grammy, Oscar, Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe, as well as the Pulitzer Prize—will join the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Pops in his first appearance as Principal Pops Conductor for one magnificent night of music on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at Uihlein Hall. Presented by Hal Leonard Corporation, this must-see event features songs from Hamlisch’s most popular productions.

Creator of the groundbreaking Broadway show, A Chorus Line, Mr. Hamlisch is a prolific composer of film scores, including such hit soundtracks as The Sting, The Way We Were, Sophie’s Choice, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Mirror Has Two Faces, and Ordinary People. He has composed a multitude of Broadway productions, including They’re Playing Our Song, Sweet Smell of Success and The Goodbye Girl. He has also scored such Woody Allen films as Take the Money and Run and The April Fools.

Mr. Hamlisch served as Musical Director and Arranger of Barbra Streisand’s 1994 concert tour of the United States and England, as well as the television special “Barbra Streisand: The Concert” for which he received two of his Emmys. In addition to Milwaukee, Mr. Hamlisch holds the position of Principal Pops Conductor with the National Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, and San Diego Symphony. -- www.milwaukeesymphony.org
