Seattle audiences will have the opportunity to hear the world’s premiere brass quintet, Canadian Brass, on two special nights, Tuesday, December 18, at 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, December 19, at 7:30 p.m. Performances will include the group’s signature Baroque arrangements such as Bach’s Concerto in D major as well as contemporary favorites like Barber’s Adagio.
Canadian Brass sprang from modest and experimental roots in Toronto, Ontario, in 1970. At that time, the brass quintet was not established as a serious concert ensemble and proved an irresistible challenge to Gene Watts (trombone) and Chuck Daellenbach (tuba). Through years of consummate musicianship, the group elevated the art of the brass quintet and established it as what it is today.
The quintet is now in its 34th season. The ensemble has a special affinity for Baroque music, which has become the group’s trademark. Their more than 60 recordings to date include works by Purcell, Vivaldi, Gabrieli, Pachelbel, J.S. Bach, Beethoven and Wagner. Television appearances include The Tonight Show, Today and Entertainment Tonight; Evening at the Pops with John Williams and the Boston Pops; Beverly Sills' Music Around the World and numerous PBS specials. The quintet has produced eight videos that have gained an international audience and has just released Three Nights with Canadian Brass, a DVD that captures the group in performance over three decades.
Each member of Canadian Brass is keenly interested in training the next generation of players. In addition to giving master classes around the world, the ensemble serves as the chamber quintet-in-residence at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California. Additionally, they have created an innovative brass summer course at the Eastman School of Music. -- www.seattlesymphony.org
