Cleveland Museum Of Art Celebrates New Year With Free Organ Concert

The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) celebrates the New Year with a free organ concert by one of the world's most respected organists, Guy Bovet, on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, at 2:30 p.m. in the spectacular Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, E. 9th St. and Superior Ave. in Downtown Cleveland. Bovet is revered as much for his wit and ability to engage audiences as his mastery and vast repertoire, which includes works by Liszt, Ravel, Alain and others.

This performance is part of CMA's VIVA! & Gala Around Town Series. Admission to the performance is free; however, free advance ticket reservations are available by calling the CMA Ticket Center at 1-888-CMA-0033 or online at www.clevelandart.org/viva. Free parking is available at Cathedral Plaza Garage on the southeast corner of E. 9th Street and Rockwell Ave (enter on Rockwell).

Guy Bovet, a Swiss native whose schedule of international performances includes over 50 concerts annually, combines scholarship, musicianship and originality in executing works ranging from Mediaeval music to Spanish compositions to Bach. His compositions, including "Three Preludes," "Suite for Souvigny" and "Twelve Ecclesiastical Tangos" are becoming increasingly popular, some recorded by the world's outstanding organists. To date, he has made more than 50 recordings and has composed more than 160 works, many for symphonies, stage and film.

His organ class at the Musikhochschule in Basel, Switzerland, includes students from five continents with as many as 15 candidates vying for each available space. In 1970, he founded Romainmotier Organ Academy, which draws more than 60 students annually for various workshops and seminars.

Bovet is editor of the Swiss organ journal La Tribune de l'Orgue. He also serves as titular organist of the Collegiate Church at Neuchâtel and is a member of the Swiss Commission on Historic Organs. In addition, he has designed and advised for many new organs in Europe, the United States and Japan. He also serves on the juries of the world's great organ competitions, including those held at Geneva, Calgary, Dallas, Tokyo and St. Albans.

This concert is one of two free organ concerts sponsored by the Museum's VIVA! & Gala Around Town series. The next organ concert will feature Cleveland's Todd Wilson on March 21.

The next performance in the VIVA! & Gala Around Town series will be In Concert with Members of The Silk Road Ensemble on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Reinberger Chamber Hall at Severance Hall in University Circle. This concert features members of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble performing an evening of stunningly beautiful music ranging from Bartók to Alizadeh, and from Komitas to Kalhor. The Capital Times calls this group "a near perfect synthesis of melody and emotion."

The Ohio Arts Council helps support the Museum with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. Promotional support for VIVA! & Gala Around Town is provided by WKSU 89.7 FM, WCLV 104.9 FM and 90.3 WCPN Ideastream. Additional support provided by The Ernest L. and Louise M. Gartner Fund, The P.J.
