The New York Times called Jackass 2.5, which includes both original material and unseen outtakes from Jackass 2 , the first studio backed film to premiere online “paving the way for more profit making web-only material,” Paramount hopes.
The new edition to the highly profitable franchise will stream for free on Dec. 19 through Blockbuster's Movielink, funded by payed commercial advertisements that will both proceed and follow a screening.
Paramount also wants Jackass 2.5 to generate traffic for the up and coming jackassworld.com, set up by branch company Viacom who owns MTV -- the network that helped launch the television series and an array of other programs featuring its cast members.
The yet to be fully launched site will be run as an online community for fans, says the Times, and will include a complete archive of Jackass episodes and the spin off program Wild Boys.
Fans will later be able to download the movie -- made for $2 million -- on Dec. 26 on sites like itunes for $15. Later a DVD will go on sale for $30. Paramount will rake in 70 percent of the online proceeds reports the Times.
The online premiere of Jackass 2.5 has been called an “experiment,” to test ad revenue profits on a feature film that solely streams online.
