Two inmates have plead guilty to a terror plot that involved planned attacks against “enemies of Islam,” targeting both the US government and supporters of Israel.
The report comes from News Week who said Kevin James and Levar Haley Washington -- both inmates at the California state prison in Sacramento – admitted to conspiracy charges on Friday.
The men were part of a prison gang composed of radical Muslims, the report says, called Jamiyyat Ul-Islam Is-Saheeh. James, the group leader, wanted his members to arm themselves with pistols and had asked them to learn to make bombs.
The group had reportedly targeted military sites and synagogues in the Los Angeles area, and investigators uncovered a press release James had drafted to be released after an attack.
“This incident is the first in a series of incidents to come in a plight to defend and propagate traditional Islam in its purity," James was quoted by News Week. "We are not extremists, radicals or terrorists. We are only servants of Allah."
Police uncovered the plot in July 2005 while investigating a series of gas station robberies that were carried out to fund the groups operations. In one robbery Washington used a shot gun to hold up a Torrence gas station on July 4.
Both men are facing 20 year sentences for conspiracy charges, and Washington an additional 5 to life sentence for brandishing the fire arm.
