New research by doctors in Australia and New Zealand has found women who have had breast cancer and take the drug anastrozole can live cancer free for longer.

The research has been presented at a Cancer Symposium in the US.

It found that after several years follow up the drug is better than others in stopping tumours from returning in post-menopausal women.

Professor John Boyages from the New South Wales Breast Cancer Institute says its significant research.

"Every little bit helps in breast cancer - whether it's early detection from screening, good surgery and radiotherapy and then good hormone therapy, particularly for older women who've gone through the menopause," he said. - ABC Australia Copyright
