Israeli president apologises for massacre

Israeli President Shimon Peres has visited the Arab village of Kafr Qasem, where he apologised for the 1956 massacre in which 47 residents of the village were killed.

At the beginning of the Sinai War in 1956, three Israeli border police officers shot and killed the 47 village residents who were making their way home from work unaware of a newly imposed curfew. The three soldiers received lengthy prison terms, but were all pardoned.

President Peres made the apology during a reception held on the occasion of the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha. Cabinet ministers had previously expressed their remorse for the massacre; however, it is the first time an Israeli president has apologised. - By Radio Netherlands
