The Scottish Chamber Orchestra welcomes in 2008 with a traditional Viennese concert in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care in Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall on Tuesday 1 January, 2008 at 7pm.
Join the players and conductor Nicholas McGegan, who makes a welcome return to the Orchestra, on a musical journey through the waltzes and polkas of the Strauss family, with an added Gallic twist, courtesy of Offenbach.
Scottish singing sensation, mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill, who last performed with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in the closing concert of the 2006/07 Season, takes centre stage for such rousing arias as Offenbach’s J’aime les Militaires from the Grand Duchesse, Léhar’s Waltz While You May from Land des Lächelns, and Strauss’ Danube, River of Dreams from The Gipsy Baron.
All proceeds from the concert will go to Marie Curie Cancer Care, contributing towards the charity’s vital work, including the running of Edinburgh’s Marie Curie Hospice, and its home nursing service for terminally ill cancer patients. Tickets are priced £10-£25 and are available now from the Queen’s Hall Box Office on 0131 668 2019.
Marie Curie Scottish Nurse of the Year, Christine Allardyce, said: “2008 is a very special year for Marie Curie Cancer Care as it marks our 60th anniversary. Thanks to people’s generosity, last year alone we were able to spend over 1.1 million nursing hours providing care to terminally ill patients and their families, both in their own homes and in our 10 hospices. With the public’s help we want to make our anniversary year even better so please join us this New Year with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra to start off the celebrations”.
Edinburgh Lord Provost George Grubb will join in the celebrations by wishing everyone a Happy New Year and Christine will say a few words about the charity and its goals for the coming year.
Roy McEwan, Managing Director of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, said: "The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is delighted to continue its relationship with Marie Curie Cancer Care which has been going for four years now. We’re glad of the opportunity to add our own efforts to the raising of much needed funds for the invaluable work which they do. The Viennese concert is a wonderful way to celebrate the New Year, and we are pleased to have two such charismatic guest artists as Nicholas McGegan and Scotland’s own Karen Cargill to lead the entertainment.”
The Viennese New Year concert will also be performed at Ayr Town Hall on Thursday 3 January and Perth Concert Hall on Friday 4 January. -- www.sco.test.poptel.org.uk
