The Royal Scottish National Orchestra will embark on its first foreign tour with Music Director Stéphane Denève in January 2008. The Orchestra will perform six concerts in three European countries: Germany, Austria and Croatia. They will be joined on tour by Grammy-winning American violinist Hilary Hahn who will be performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major.
The tour will commence at the Rudolf-Oetker-Halle, Bielefeld, Germany (Friday 25 January) and continues to the Festspielhaus, Baden-Baden (Saturday 26 January), Audimax der Unversität, Regensburg (Sunday 27 January), Philharmonie, Essen (Tuesday 29 January), Wiener Konzerthaus, Vienna (Wednesday 30 January) and finally the Lisinski Hall, Zagreb (Thursday 31 January). All concerts will feature performances of Richard Strauss’s Don Juan and on all but one of the dates the Orchestra will perform Debussy’s Prélude à l'après midi d’un faune and La Mer. The concert in Baden-Baden will instead feature Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances.
RSNO Music Director Stéphane Denève said: "In my third year as music director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, after having conducted more than 75 concerts in Scotland, I’m now very excited to show abroad our great musical partnership. I'm also extremely proud to be able to offer to German, Austrian and Croatian audiences the cultural flagship of Scotland: its great orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Their enthusiasm and generous music-making, a mix of Russian, German and French music, plus the exceptional participation of the American soloist Hilary Hahn should be the perfect recipe for thrilling concerts.”
This is the Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s first European tour with Denève but it will not be the first time they have performed abroad together. In February 2006 the Orchestra performed a one-off sold-out concert at the Maison de Radio-France in Paris as part of the Présences 2006 music festival. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra last performed in Austria and Croatia in May 2005, under the baton of Conductor Emeritus Walter Weller.
The tour is supported by the Scottish Government’s International Touring Fund, which aims to help the National Performing Companies spread the message of Scotland’s cultural confidence and ambition. -- www.rsno.org.uk
