Mahler’s Third: What Angels Tell Me

“You couldn’t imagine how this will sound!”, so said Gustav Mahler of his Third, a glorious symphonic opus scored for mezzo-soprano, chorus and orchestra which will be performed by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra on January 26, conducted by Music Director Lan Shui.

Indeed, this one of Mahler’s most unjustifiably neglected symphonies is the first work into which he incorporated his whole universe: each movement represents an element in the universe – plants, animals, man, angels - all culminating in a concluding celebration of divine love in the final movement.

The unique vocal timbre of American mezzo-soprano Nancy Maultsby will be complemented by a combined ladies’ chorus and the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir in the fifth movement, which is based on a poem from the folk collection, Das Knaben Wunderhorn.

Possessing both unique vocal timbre and insightful musicianship, Nancy Maultsby has a repertoire extending from the operas of Monteverdi and Handel to recent works by John Adams. She regularly performs the major heroines of nineteenth-century French, Italian and German opera and the great symphonic works, including the music of Mahler. -- www.sso.org.sg
