US launches diplomatic offensive in Pakistan

The United States has launched a diplomatic offensive to prevent Pakistan from falling into chaos following Benazir Bhutto's assassination. Washington says it is in close contact with the political parties in Pakistan and with allies throughout the world.

On Friday, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that it is important for the democratic process to go forward. President Pervez Musharraf says it's too early for a decision to be made on whether the elections due to take place on 8 January should go ahead. The opposition, however, wants the elections postponed.

In response to the assassination of Ms Bhutto, Poland has decided to deploy 400 more troops to neighbouring Afghanistan. Warsaw fears destabilisation in the region. The Pakistani government blames the assassination attack on al-Qaeda, which is increasingly gaining ground in the Pakistan-Afghan border region.
