
The English city of Liverpool and the Norwegian city of Stavanger will become, from 1 January, the joint 'cultural capital of Europe'.
The initiative, which began in 1985, is intended by Brussels to bring the people of Europe closer together.
In 2001, Rotterdam in the Netherlands was the capital. It will be the Netherlands' turn again in 2018. A number of towns in the province of North Brabant have already put their names forward as candidates for the position.
