Los Angeles Philharmonic double bass players Christopher Hanulik, Oscar Meza, David Allen Moore and Peter Rofé perform Gunther Schuller’s Double Bass Quartet. Schuller, a composer and performer that traverses both the jazz and classical worlds, composed this piece in 1947, only to face rejection upon its initial introduction in 1948 - a time when composers more or less expected not to get performed. The piece has since been widely performed all over the world since its Carnegie Hall debut in 1960.

Composer, critic, publisher and editor Paul Turok has collaborated with Los Angeles Philharmonic oboe and English horn player Carolyn Hove on several pieces, including his Quintet for English Horn and Strings. Joining Carolyn Hove for this performance are Camille Avellano and Robert Gupta, violins; Dana Hansen, viola; and Barry Gold, cello.

Inspired by an unusually dark winter, John Harbison composed Snow Country for oboe and strings in 1979, and it has since proven popular with performers. Los Angeles Philharmonic members Ariana Ghez, oboe; Mitchell Newman and Johnny Lee, violins; Dana Hansen, viola; Jason Lippmann, cello; and Christopher Hanulik, double bass; perform.

Charles Ives, the godfather of American music, began writing his Piano Trio in 1904, but did not fully complete the piece until 1911. It is considered one of his greatest works. This evening’s trio features Martin Chalifour, violin; Peter Stumpf, cello; and Joanne Pearce Martin, piano.

The concert concludes with Paul Moravec’s Scherzo, performed by Martin Chalifour, violin; Peter Stumpf, cello; and Joanne Pearce Martin, piano. Moravec has composed over 90 orchestral, chamber, choral, lyric, film and electro-acoustic compositions. The Wall Street Journal describes his music as “assured, virtuosic.” Moravec is best known for his work Tempest Fantasy, which received the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Music.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 2007/08 Chamber Music Society series at Walt Disney Concert Hall includes performances by members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and distinguished guest artists. On Feb. 12, 2008, Los Angeles Philharmonic members perform Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E-flat major, and Ravel’s String Quartet. Upcoming guest artists include: violinist Janine Jansen on March 18; Gustavo Dudamel playing violin March 26; pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet on April 15; and bass-baritone Eric Owens on May 13.
