Pakistan's electoral commission has delayed a decision on whether to postpone the 8th of January parliamentary elections until Tuesday.

The decision was to have been taken today, but the commission says it is awaiting information from the provincial authorities about the security situation. However, senior government officials says the election will probably be postponed for at least four weeks.

The party of the assassinated opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, the Pakistan People's Party, says it wants the election to go ahead as planned. The party has named Mrs Bhutto's 19-year-old son Bilawal as its new leader. He will replace his mother once he finishes his studies in Oxford. Her husband Asif Ali Zardari was named co-chairman and will lead the party in the meantime.
