Disturbances continue in Kenya following the controversial re-election of President Mwai Kibaki, with more than 100 supporters of opposition candidate Raila Odinga killed in the past day. At least 64 people were killed overnight in western Kenya, and another 40 died in the slums of the capital Nairobi.

A curfew has been proclaimed in the Mathare neighbourhood of Nairobi and in the western city of Kisumu, which is an opposition stronghold.

The violence erupted on Sunday, shortly after Kenya's Electoral Commission declared President Kibaki the winner of Thursday's election, with a lead of just over 200,000 votes. Mr Kibaki was sworn in immediately after the official results were announced for a second five-year term.

European Union monitor Alexander Graf Lambsdorff says the "tallying process lacks credibility" and that there is a "doubt on the accuracy of the final results". The United States has voiced its concern over "serious problems" with the counting of votes in Kenya.

Mr Odinga, who was planning to hold an alternative inauguration ceremony today, has postponed the event until Thursday.
