Three bombs explode in southern Thailand

At least 27 people have been injured in three explosions in southern Thailand, where Muslim separatists are fighting for an Islamic state. The bombs exploded in the parking lots of two hotels and at a discotheque in the town of Sungai Kolok, near the Malaysian border.

More than 2,500 people have been killed in separatist violence in the past four years. With the exception of its southern border states, Thailand is an overwhelmingly Buddhist country.

Security in the capital Bangkok has been increased on the eve of the new year. In 2006, three people were killed in eight explosions in the capital during New Year's celebrations.
