UNIMAD begins Darfur operations

Posted December 31st, 2007 by harminka

The United Nations-African Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNIMAD) begins operations today. UN participation in the mission is so far symbolic since most of the forces on the ground are from the African Union, which has 7,000 soldiers stationed in Darfur from its previous peacekeeping mission.

The UN hopes to expand the number of troops to 26,000. However, Sudanese objections to the composition to the UN force have been causing delays in the operation.

The peacekeeping mission would be the largest in UN history. The purpose of UNIMAD is to bring an end to the conflict in Darfur, which has caused more than 200,000 deaths.
