Pakistan delays decision on election date

On Wednesday, the Pakistani electoral committee will announce whether the elections due to take place on 8 January will go ahead. The committee was expected to decide on the matter on Monday, but the decision has been postponed twice.

The preparations for the election have been seriously disrupted following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and the ensuing violence. A top electoral committee official told the AFP press agency that Pakistan will probably go to the polls at the end of February.

Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party and the other opposition leader Nawaz Sharif both want the election to go ahead as planned. However, President Pervez Musharraf's ruling PML-Q party wants to postpone the poll. On Wednesday, the president will address the people of Pakistan.
