“It is rare for the Vatican to release treasures of such value and importance - it is certainly the first time they have done so to New Zealand and it’s probably the last time we’ll ever see them here.“Said Dr Vitali, Auckland Museum’s recently appointed director. “While the Vatican draws millions of visitors each year to view its art and history, many of these objects have never been on display before, even in Rome.”
The exhibition will open just prior to Easter on March 7 2008, and will give visitors the opportunity to delve into Vatican’s incredibly rich history, art and architecture.
More than 80 authentic pieces, as well as several reproductions, trace 2000 years of the Vatican’s history, beginning with Saint Peter through to the current Pope Benedict XVI .
“The Vatican has been a dominant force in the West over the last 2000 years influencing art, history and culture," said Dr Vitali adding that she sees the “Vatican’s art and architecture as is it’s most profound legacy though its ability to inspire.” -- www.aucklandmuseum.com
