Famous tennis player Martina Hingis, who at once was world's number one tennis player, is banned from playing tennis professionally by a disciplinary tribunal of The International Tennis Federation (IFT) after testing positive to cocain last year.
The ITF stated “The Tribunal rejected the suggestion made on behalf of Ms. Martina Hingis that there were doubts about the identity and/or integrity of the sample attributed to her.” Hingis was found to have committed a doping offence as stated under Article C.1 of the program.
Martina Hingis filed a plea of No Fault or Negligence since there was no way of showing how the cocaine was able to enter her body. She still claims her innocence saying that she received a negative test result on a hair test.
Hingis will be banned from the sport as of October 1, however, the 27 year old athlete has announced her retirement. All records of Hingis’ win at Wimbledon have been removed and she is expected to repay the $129, 481 she won at the event.
Winning 43 WTA singles titles before her 14th birthday, Hingis is a skilled and incredibly talented athlete. She first retired in response to ankle injuries in 2003 but came back in 2006 to win titles in Kolkata, Rome and Tokyo.
Martina Hingis was given three weeks to appeal the decision of The International Tennis Federation.
