Italy appoints trash czar

The Italian government has appointed former police chief Gianni de Gennaro to resolve the waste disposal crisis in the Naples region.

Delays in the completion of new incineration plant led to mountains of garbage piling up in the streets of the city of Naples. Eventually, the army was deployed to clear the streets. Mr De Gennaro has been given three months to resolve the issue.

Rome has also promised to build new waste incineration plants and landfills. A recent government attempt to resolve the crisis by reopening of old landfills in southern Italy has led to clashes between police and outraged local residents. By Copyright Radio Netherlands
