Education Week's Quality Counts Gives Michigan A C+

Michigan received an overall grade of a C+ in Education Week's annual Quality Counts edition, released today.

Education Week evaluated the 50 states and the District of Columbia on a number of factors in six areas. Michigan ranked poorly, compared to other states, in K-12 achievement, receiving a D. The other area the state did not rank well in related to efforts to improve the teaching profession, where Michigan received a D+.

The state posted its best showing, receiving an A-, in the area of standards, assessments and accountability. Michigan also did well in the areas of school finance and efforts to link the K-12 system with early childhood education, higher education and the work world.

In Education Week's Quality Counts Report Michigan was average in the area of chance for success, which measures everything from family income to high school graduation to steady employment.
