Monteverdi's opera L'incoronazione di Poppea, which is a story of love and deception in ancient Rome, is not only one of the world's earliest operas; it is also one of the most complex – an evocative and bizarre work of great musical beauty. The Royal Danish Opera has taken the unprecedented step of featuring early opera at the Main Stage of the Opera rather than at the Old Stage due to David McVicar's spectacular production that reflects the grand-scale drama of the new opera house.

Performances: 13|15|17|19 January and 09|12|14|16 February 2008

The Scottish director has previously demonstrated his masterly skills as a director of character in his staging of Mozart's La clemenza di Tito for the Royal Danish Opera.

The Royal Danish Opera's major presentation of baroque operas features some of Scandinavia's most brilliant musicians, including Scandinavia's leading period instrument ensemble Concerto Copenhagen conducted by Lars Ulrik Mortensen; who is a leading capacity within baroque music. He has previously conducted the Royal Danish Opera's production of Handel's Giulio Cesare and Monteverdi's Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria and now he and his amazing ensemble will embark on yet another performance of a baroque opera masterpiece.

Ylva Kihlberg, who compellingly performed as Vitellia in McVicar's staging of La clemenza di Tito at the Royal Danish Opera, will appear in the title role as Poppea, whose unbridled ambition is to become empress of Imperial Rome. Emperor Nero, who is infatuated with Poppea, will be performed by Tuva Semmingsen, who made a formidable appearance in two previous Royal Danish Opera productions of early baroque operas, namely Handel's Giulio Cesare and Monteverdi's Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria.

Hanne Fischer will perform as Nero's faithful wife, Ottavia, who yields to her unscrupulous rival. Poppea's ex-husband Ottone, who initially implores Poppea to return, only later to attempt to assassinate her, will be performed by contra tenor Stephen Wallace. Drusilla, who is so in love with Ottone that she is prepared to follow him into exile, will be performed by Sine Bundgaard. And appearing as Poppea's old wet nurse Arnalta is Gert Henning-Jensen. Other performers include: Trine Bastrup Moller, Antonio Abate, Susanne Resmark, Jan Kund, Mariana Ortiz, Magnus Staveland, Havard Stensvold, Jens Sondergaard and Maria Kontra. -- www.kglteater.dk
