"It's the kind of Beethoven I have not heard since the heydays of Claudio Arrau and super-musician Clara Haskil herself." -- San Francisco Chronicle
Mihaela Ursuleasa won the Clara Haskil Competition at the age of sixteen, and has since become one of the most important pianists of her generation. Ms. Ursuleasa studied with Prof. Heinz Medjimorec at the Vienna Conservatory, and has appeared with many of the great orchestras worldwide, as well as in recital in many concert halls around the world. A proud ambassador of Romanian art and artists, Ms. Ursuleasa makes her Vancouver and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra debut in these performances.
Harvard alumnus Hugh Wolff is one of the leading conductors of his generation, having conducted all of North America's major orchestras, and many orchestras in Europe. Born in Paris, Maestro Wolff studied conducting with Charles Bruck and composition with Olivier Messiaen; he then continued his studies in Baltimore with Leon Fleisher, developing the technique and style that led to the New York Times, amongst many critical accolades, commenting of his work with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra: "The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Hugh Wolff, has developed an effortlessly polished sound...Maestro Wolff shapes his interpretations with impeccable taste."
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is also proud to announce that Beltone has become the new sponsor of the Symphony Sundays series. Beltone is committed to a higher standard of professional hearing care in our community, and North America wide. The fit is a natural one, and the VSO is grateful for the support and the new partnership. Commenting on the relationship with the VSO, Sergiy Fadyeyev, Director, Beltone Vancouver, commented: "Beltone is very proud to support the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. We believe that music is a gift everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy. -- www.vancouversymphony.ca
