Although a lot of companies and websites out there claim to give you a copy of your credit reports for free, over 95% of them will make you to sign up to a credit monitoring service which will eventually cost you money before you can see your "free" credit report.

You've seen them on T.V. and you've heard them on the radio. Now the internet is the next "hot spot" for these free credit report scams that lure you into there website by making you believe you will get to instantaneously see your credit reports for free. But when you get to the website you find that they want to give you a free trial of their credit monitoring or credit repair services in which you'll have to give up your debit/credit card number to enroll. Then if you don't cancel within the free trial you start being charged a monthly fee for their service. All this just to get your free credit report!

The real fact is that there is a way to get a free copy of your credit reports once a year but you'll have to get them directly from the credit bureaus themselves and not some third party vendor. There are a few websites out there that were created to help inform people on how to do this without being scammed. There are just so many more sites trying to scam people out of there hard earned money that it makes it difficult to distinguish the two.

One thing to keep in mind is that it is not important to know what your credit score is without completely understanding everything that is on your credit report. You could have an extremely high credit score but a tax lien or bankruptcy from years ago can still cause you to be declined. The key basics to good credit is simply making sure you pay your bills on time and knowing that everything on your credit report is yours and not someone else's. This can be easily accomplished by a little self control and knowing how to take advantage of everyone's right to see a copy of their three credit reports each and every year.

There are still a few of us out there trying to do the right thing...

About Credit Report Fraud

Anonymous's picture

Hi,

I have just found myself in the same fraud. First, I have myself been a security expert myself, so if they can fool me, I am sure there a lot of nice naive people out there who would have already got into this trap and still not aware about it.

In my case, I searched for "free credit report" on Google and clicked on the sponsered results assuming they can be trusted. Well, I was wrong. The company started withdrawing $25/month. But what is this money for? For increasing the spam in my mailbox by 3 times? They don't provide any service worth this money.

This is pure ripping off of money. Where can I find a Consumer Court?
