Now in their 59th year of performance, The Four Freshmen continue to bring their unique brand of vocal harmony to audiences worldwide. Their show is a mixture of new arrangements of jazz standards and familiar classic favorites and will be presented by the City of Indian Wells on Monday, January 28, 2008 at 8:00pm at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert.
The Four Freshmen were one of the top vocal groups of the 1950s and formed the bridge between '40s ensembles and harmony-based rock & roll. Their repertoire centered on standards and showed an unusually free, improvisational approach to their harmony singing. Their first hit single was "It's a Blue World" in 1952 and they enjoyed further success with "Mood Indigo," "Day by Day" and "Graduation Day."
New lineups of the group have performed into the 21st century and, in 2000, were voted Vocal Group of the Year by Down Beat magazine's readers. The Four Freshmen continue to demonstrate their validity as a top vocal group and the group today consists of Brian Eichenberger (lead voice and guitar), Curtis Calderon (2nd voice and trumpet), Vince Johnson (3rd voice and bass), and Bob Ferreira (4th voice and drums).
Brian Eichenberger, a native of Minnesota, joined the group in 1996 and is only the third lead singer in The Four Freshmen's history. Curtis Calderon, from San Antonio, Texas, is the "freshest" of The Four Freshmen, joining the group in 2001. He sings the second part and plays trumpet and flugelhorn for the Freshmen. Vince Johnson, born and raised in San Luis Obispo, joined the Freshmen in 1999, and sings baritone and plays bass, guitar and trombone. Bob Ferreira, who sings the fourth voice and plays drums, is a native of Somerville, Massachusetts. He auditioned for The Four Freshmen in 1992 and has been with the group ever since.
The Four Freshmen are presented by the City of Indian Wells and will appear at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, California, on Monday, January 28, 2008, at 8:00pm. Tickets are priced at $60, $40, $30 and $20 and tickets for Indian Wells residents are $55, $35, $25 and $15. -- www.mccallumtheatre.com
