“Since Groundhog Day falls on a Saturday, it is a great opportunity to add to the Corcoran’s calendar of children’s workshops,” said Richard Selden, director of continuing education at the Corcoran. “We encourage parents to bring their families, with children ages five through 13, to the Corcoran on February 2.”
The Groundhog Day workshops are as follows:
Art of the Pennsylvania Dutch (Ages 5–7)
The Pennsylvania Dutch brought Groundhog Day to America. After learning about their culture and art, paint some colorful hex signs to hang on the refrigerator, in your room, or on your barn.
Natural Time (Ages 8–10)
Can a large rodent really forecast the weather? Maybe not, but with the sun's help it can tell time. Work together to build and decorate a giant sundial with you-know-who in the center.
Drawing Shadows (Ages 11–13)
See how Caravaggio and Rembrandt used the technique known as chiaroscuro, an Italian word for the contrast between light and dark. Then try out “shadowy” techniques such as crosshatching with pencil, blending with charcoal, and working on toned paper.
Admission to the Corcoran’s Groundhog Day workshops is $35 per child (or free with Family Membership) and pre-registration is required. Materials are included.
The Corcoran College of Art + Design’s Continuing Education program offers dozens of studio art classes for children at its Downtown and Georgetown Campuses and at satellite locations in Glen Echo Park, Maryland, and McLean, Virginia. About 350 children enroll in Camp Creativity, a series of eight weeklong workshops from mid-June to mid-August at the Corcoran’s Georgetown Campus. -- www.corcoran.org
