The stones that pave many of Sweden's streets and squares have been made under extremely bad working conditions in China.
This was revealed by an investigation carried out by the NGO review association Swedwatch for four municipalities in Sweden.
It visited seven stone suppliers in China last October and found many infringements of international standards for working environments. Workers had none of the protective clothing required to prevent stone dust getting into their lungs. They were also still found to have received no health and safety training despite Swedish radio programme Kaliber previously having exposed the failings two years ago.
Environmental leaders in Gothenburg, one of the municipalities who commissioned the study, said they were glad no child labour was found but admitted they had hoped conditions would have been improved by now. But a researcher at Swedwatch said in order for changes to take place, the whole of Europe needs to be involved to raise the general consciousness of the problem in China. - Source: By © Copyright Sveriges Radio
