US defense officials in the interview to ABC news, reveals that North Korea will be conducting new nuclear test. Intelligence community is divided on the timing of the test.
In October of last year UN Security Council passed resolution 1718 to impose sanctions on North Korea and called to complete abandonment of nuclear ambitions.
Recently on the six-party talks North Korea's chief negotiator, Kim Kye Gwan, said his country had joined the exclusive nuclear club and expected to receive the world's respect. The only way the North will consider stepping back from its nuclear program will be if the following happens: the United Nations lifts all sanctions, the United States ends its freeze of North Korean financial assets at its principal bank in Macau and the Americans end their threats and hostility against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
World reaction at the first test was summarized by fellow bloggers as following.
Second detonation? "US intelligence has detected an explosion of less than one kiloton in magnitude in North Korea"¦" Not known if nuclear. (The Australian)
The first casualty of the North Korean nuclear test may be South Korea's 'Sunshine Policy'-"a well-intentioned but sometimes badly executed attempt to achieve slow-motion reunification by increasing Pyongyang's dependence on the South."Â (Timothy Savage @ Oh My News)
Will Japan Go Nuclear? "Many political analysts say the test"¦could weaken public support for the nation's post-World War II pacifism, and prompt Japan to seek a growing role in regional security." Nuclear weapons for the country remain very controversial. "The prospect of a nuclear Japan might also send shudders through the rest of Asia, where memories are still raw from Japan's wartime aggression," and, of course, Japan remains the only country to have been nuked. (IHT)
The UN and US officials exercise caution and apparently the tactics of current six-party talk is just talk. The imposed sanctions are not working as many political analysts expected. Is there alternative? The major partner such as Russia was distancing from harsh measures and in the recent polls Russians are afraid as North Korea just couple hundred kilometers from Russian border.
It could be profitable to change the current talk strategy and bring broader circle of countries who is interested in peace resolution on the Korean peninsula.
