Vachovia Lowers Prime Rate

Effective today, Wachovia Corporation (NYSE:WB) lowered its prime interest rate to 6.50 percent from 7.25 percent at Wachovia Bank, National Association and all of its other banking subsidiaries.

The prime rate is a benchmark used to set interest rates on various forms of corporate and consumer credit. It is one of several interest rate bases used by Wachovia, which lends at interest rates above and below the prime rate. The prime rate last changed on December 11, 2007.

The Prime Interest Rate is the interest rate charged by banks to their most creditworthy customers (usually the most prominent and stable business customers). The rate is almost always the same amongst major banks. Adjustments to the prime lending rate are made by banks at the same time; although, the prime rate does not adjust on any regular basis. The rates reported below are based upon the prime rates on the first day of each respective month.
