Tradespeople in short supply to build houses in Australia

The latest trades report from the Housing Industry Association (HIA) has shown another decline in the number tradespeople available to build houses.

All 13 trades surveyed were in short supply in the final quarter of 2007, with Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth the most severely affected by the skills shortages.

The association's Chris Lamont says for some time trade shortages have been absorbed by price increases.

"We're getting to the point though where that absorption can not simply occur, that trade prices and the shortage in trade skills are going to have to be passed on in the form of higher prices and for those building, for those renovating, that is going to mean some pretty significant price spikes," he said.
