Obviously this story is on fire. Members of the community are calling into radio shows, posting comments online about the steamy text messages Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his Chief of Staff Christine Beatty exchanged during 2002-2003.
One of the reasons people are so vocal and emotional about the exchanges is that during last year's Whistleblower trial in which two former Detroit Police officers alleged they were fired because they did not play along with the Mayor and his deceptions, Mayor Kilpatrick and Ms. Beatty were both asked under oath if they had had a sexual affair. Both denied it under oath, so therefore perjury is now an issue along with the infidelity.
The Wayne County Prosecutor has not responded to any of these charges. The judge over that trial, Michael Callahan has said these text messages has no bearing on the case because the defendants won the lawsuit. The defendants won a combined $6.5 million in 2007.
At the time, Ms. Beatty was married, but has since gotten a divorce from her husband in 2006.
Mayor Kilpatrick on the other hand has fought off rumors every since he has been in office about illicit affairs, even though he is married and has three sons. His mother is distinguished Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick.
Everyone has an opinion on this subject, most of the citizens of Detroit are calling for Christine Beatty to step down. Political pundits are saying it is easier for the Chief of Staff to step down than the Mayor. There are just too many legal steps involved in replacing a Mayor.
Many are even comparing Mayor Kilpatricks' escapades to former President Bill Clinton.
Wow! This story is even on the Google Trends as being "On Fire."
The Detroit Free Press, who broke the story after requesting copies of the text messages from SkyTel, has also posted an animation regarding this story. Check it out. Let me know what you think. Do you think the media has gone too far with this story?
It's a story that unfortunately paints Detroit in such a negative manner. We are just days away from resolving the 9-1-1 fiasco of 2006, the Whistleblower case was settled in September, now this. I'd like to wake up one morning and not be the subject of every lead story on the National News shows (MSNBC).

Do you think the media has gone too far with this story?
No. It seems that with so many examples of cover up by government officials, media coverage like this case is receiving, should wake up the citizens of Detroit. I hope that Kilpatrick will step down now, but he may try to make like Clinton and weather this controversy as usual, using race again as his defense.
