The Prime Minister of th United Kingdom thanks Hain for "valuable work"

The Prime Minister has exchanged letters with Peter Hain following the Secretary of State's decision to resign from the Government.

Mr Brown thanked Mr Hain for his work at the Department for Work and Pensions and also for his contributions to a number of "important Ministerial roles in Government".

Mr Hain had shown "real commitment" to representing the interests of Wales within Government, the PM said. He also praised Mr Hain's work in Northern Ireland, saying that he played a "vital role" in securing peace and stability.

The Prime Minister said in closing:

"Over many years you have always played an active role in politics and I know that you will continue to make a contribution to public life in the future. I would like to place on the record my thanks for your years of public service."
