Prepare for an opera spectacle unlike any Charlotte has ever seen. Opera Carolina presents Aida, Verdi's extravagant masterpiece, in an elaborate portrayal of forbidden love. Set in ancient Egypt, a young Ethiopian princess, Aida, is condemned to slavery by the Egyptians.

However, her captor, Radamés, succumbs to her beauty and the two fall desperately in love. Fighting for their freedom to be together, Aida and Radamés finally find unity in death.

True to Verdi's intentions, Aida continues to be one of the most elaborate productions on the operatic stage. Opera Carolina has maintained this tradition, bringing the exoticism and lavishness of ancient Egypt to Charlotte. Unique to this production is the incorporation an array of live African wildlife on stage including a white horse, a zebra, a camel, two snakes, and yes, a watusi. With an ensemble cast of over 200 people, Opera Carolina's production of Aida will reverberate with the energy and passion of an unbridled love story that still touches audiences throughout the ages.

Aida will be performed in the Belk Theater of the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center January 31 at 7:30 p.m., February 1 & 2 at 8:00 p.m. & February 3 at 2:00 p.m.

Aida is sung in Italian with projected English titles. All performances feature the Opera Carolina Chorus and The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. -- www.operacarolina.org
