Brothers Carlo and Marco Rizzi take to the stage for the first time in Wales for a concert with the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera at St David's Hall, Cardiff, on Saturday 2 February ( 7.30pm).
Carlo Rizzi, former Music Director of WNO, is renowned as an opera conductor across the world, whilst brother Marco is a prize-winning violinist. But to date, they have never shared a concert platform in Wales, something that will change with a very special performance of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto as part of the concert programme with WNO.
In his native Italy, Marco has won acclaim for appearances in leading concert halls such as Teatro all Scala in Milan. In 1991, he was awarded the Europäischen Musikförderpreis on the recommendation of Claudio Abbado. In addition to his successful solo career, Marco is also passionately active in chamber music. He plays on a beautiful 18th century Pietro Guarneri violin Meanwhile, his brother Carlo has forged a career as guest conductor with many of the world's leading opera houses, including Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden and La Scala. He recently made his debut at the Salzburg Festival with a new production of La traviata. Prior to this, Carlo was Music Director of WNO from 1992 - 2001, and again from 2004 - 2007. In Summer 2008, he returns to WNO as guest conductor on a new production of Verdi's Aida.
The concert programme forms part of St David's Hall Orchestral Concert Series. In addition to Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, widely regarded to be one of the most popular violin concertos of all time, the repertoire will also feature the composer's great seascape The Hebrides Overture and Elgar's lyrical Symphony No 2. -- www.wno.org.uk
