The two exchanged over 14,000 text messages between 2002-2003 concerning their sexual affair. Both were married at the time, Beatty has since divorced in 2006. Kilpatrick remains married and has 3 children.
Detroit radio listeners on the top radio station voiced an overwhelming displeasure with the Mayor and Beatty. Over 83% of WMXD 92.3 listeners, Detroit's top urban adult contemporary station voiced disappointment and believe if Christine Beatty remains in her role as chief of staff, her position would be compromised.
Here is an excerpt of what Wayne County Prosecutor said:
"Yesterday there was an article that appeared in the Detroit Free Press about the mayor and his chief of staff. I found out about this article when you did, in the morning newspaper.
"There are people who mistakenly believe that this office has been conducting an investigation. That could not be further from the truth and we have received no information whatsover from any police agency.
"News reports and articles are not investigations and they are not evidence. We cannot and will not make any potential charging decision based on that.
"However, here is the decision that I have made. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office will conduct an independent investigation that will be fair, impartial, and thorough. We will not be rushed by anyone or anything.
"We will only be influenced by the evidence and the facts that develop -- and nothing, I mean nothing else. Thank you for coming."
