Magnus Lindberg's Clarinet Concerto has been variously described as melodic and lyrical, masterly, amusing and exciting. One of Europe's finest young composers, Lindberg wrote it specially for the formidable talents of Kari Kriikku, who gave its world premiere in 2002 and who will perform it again in Singapore on March 1.
One of Finland's most extraordinary musicians, Kari Kriikku is recognised as a champion of contemporary music while maintaining his position as an important interpreter of the standard clarinet repertoire.
Working closely with such colleagues as Magnus Lindberg and Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kriikku has been the Artistic Director of the groundbreaking Avanti! Chamber Orchestra since 1998. His musical inventiveness and fresh attitude towards traditional performance have established for him a fascinating and versatile career both as soloist and chamber musician.
Conducting the Singapore Symphony Orchestra is Finnish maestro Okko Kamu. The performance will also include Schumann's charming Third Symphony, a celebration of the glorious Rhineland. Comprising five movements, the "extra" fourth was inspired by a cathedral visit in Cologne. -- www.sso.org.sg
