On Thursday Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute expelled a student who had served a prison sentence for murder.
The cause of the expulsion however was not because of the conviction; rather it was that the student had falsified high school examination results upon application to the Institute.
The Swedish Government is now considering a law to stop people with certain criminal records from studying.
A spokesperson for the Education Department said this does not concern many students but it is still an important question to be discussed.
Currently the law stipulates that a student can only be expelled there are severe psychological problems or drug use or if they commit a serious crime during their studies. Other than that there is no legal reason why a person cannot study.
