Despite the decrease at the beginning of the decade the new figures from the organisation researching antibiotic resistance, Strama, show that usage has increased in every area of the country except Uppsala. The majority of the drugs prescribed were to babies and children.
Strama say there is a clear relationship between the rise in antibiotic use and the increase in resistant strains of bacteria.
A doctor active in the Strama program said the reason for the increase may be that many doctors do not know the limitations of antibiotics. For example they cannot be used to treat viruses.
Sweden still has the lowest antibiotic use of all the Nordic countries.
