Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown have opened talks in London as opponents of the Pakistani leader demonstrate nearby.

The talks at 10 Downing Street are expected to focus on the struggle against terrorism and efforts to guarantee that next month's parliamentary elections in Pakistan will be free and fair. Mr. Musharraf insists support for his leadership is the best way to assure progress in the struggle against extremism. He has also pledged that the February 18 vote will be free, fair and transparent.

But the protesters, including former Pakistani cricket star turned-politician Imran Khan and his former wife, questioned how Mr. Brown could be hosting what they call a dictator.

The meeting came as the Pakistani leader was winding up a week-long European tour.

Meanwhile, news reports from Israel say Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Mr. Musharraf met while both were in Paris last week.

The two men were reported to have stayed at the same hotel and met first by accident. They then scheduled a longer meeting.

Israeli news media say that Barak told Mr. Musharraf he was concerned about the growing strength of Islamic extremists in Pakistan. He also said he worried that Pakistan's nuclear weapons could fall into the hands of extremists.

The reports say President Musharraf told Barak that Pakistan's nuclear arsenal was secure and well guarded.
