Detroit children will share their beliefs on diverse themes such as freedom, love, civil rights and world peace at the Youth Poetry Slam The Max. The Slam, presented by Starbucks Coffee and hosted by Kalimah Johnson of PicNap Poetry, takes place Saturday, February 9 in The Music Box at the Max M. Fisher Music Center. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the competition begins at 8 p.m.
This night of evocative poetry and spoken-word features teens ages 13 to 18. Each poet is allowed three minutes plus a 10-second grace period to read one poem and are judged by a jury made up of members of the audience. Compositions must be original works written by the performers, and participants may not use props, costumes, or musical instruments in their readings. Competitors are eligible to win a $250 gift card to Borders book store, Starbucks gift cards and tickets to DSO events. In addition, attendees will enjoy music provided by special guest DJ InCredibul as well as a full cash bar, Starbucks coffee and food service.
The Youth Poetry Slam is part of the Poetry Slam series presented by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra featuring six competitions throughout the DSO season. Remaining slams will take place Thursday, March 6; Saturday, April 19; and Thursday, May 22.
The Max has hosted poetry slams and spoken-word events since 2004 as part of the DSO's mission to expand and diversify the organization's music and cultural offerings. The slams are sponsored by Starbucks Coffee, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan. -- www.detroitsymphony.com
