Academy Award-winning actor George Clooney is visiting the United Nations Thursday, in his new role as the world body's messenger of peace.

A throng of enthusiastic female U.N. employees greeted the 46-year-old as he arrived at the New York headquarters for a tour and round of media interviews.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon named Clooney to the post earlier this month for his efforts to bring attention to the suffering in Sudan's war-torn Darfur region. The actor recently returned from a trip to Sudan.

Clooney joins a number of other notable personalities as U.N. messengers of peace, chosen for their ability to focus public attention on critical international political and social issues.

The list includes actor Michael Douglas, Nobel Peace laureate Elie Wiesel, classical musician Yo-Yo Ma, British primatologist Jane Goodall, and Princess Haya of Jordan.
