Sponsored by the Palm Springs Opera Guild, Europe's famed Teatro Lirico presents a stunning traditional performance of the passions and romantic tragedy of Giacomo Puccini's "Tosca" on Sunday, February 10, 2008 at 7:00pm.
"Tosca", which had its world premiere at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in 1900, is a drama of frightening power. Like all Puccini's operas, it shows his genius as a composer and dramatist, for he made the music and the characters quite simply unforgettable. In "Tosca", Puccini brings three main figures to life. The title role is Tosca, a famous opera singer, deeply religious and spiritual, yet passionate and fatally jealous. Her lover is Mario Cavaradossi, a sensitive artist, an honest and good-natured man who admits to being madly in love with Tosca although he understands how jealous she is. Both Tosca and Cavaradossi are caught in the web of the evil Baron Scarpia, the chief of the Roman police who has been secretly in love with Tosca, and is determined to possess her.
Teatro Lirico D'Europa was formed in 1988 by Giorgio Lalov, a former Bulgarian opera singer, and has completed more than 3,000 performances worldwide. Its seven seasons of opera tours in the United States covers over 400 performances. The popular opera company is embarking on its eighth consecutive season of American tours and this is the second U.S. tour of their production of the traditional version of the unforgettable "Tosca." The company features a large cast, sets, costumes and a 55-piece orchestra.
