This major exhibition of photography and video work will introduce emerging and established Colombian talent rarely seen in the UK. A diverse group of six artists are united in their desire to reconcile Colombia’s past and ongoing conflicts. They explore notions of memory, repetition, and performance to understand acts of violence and experiences of trauma and loss.
Milena Bonilla (b.1975), Juan Manuel Echavarríá (b.1947), Juan Pablo Echeverri (b.1978), María Elvira Escallón (b.1954), Oscar Muñoz (b.1951) and María Isabel Rueda (b.1972) have all made their work in Colombia a country that has, since the 1940s, been blighted by violent internal conflicts and struggles for power.
This is inevitably referenced either directly or obliquely in some works while others explore qualities not usually associated with such a troubled country such as humour, youth, fashion and playfulness. Sometimes playful and witty, other times more painful and harrowing, the artists ensure we remember these fleeting moments and suggest the notion of Once More, With Feeling: an action repeated, remembered or re-visited.
Milena Bonilla’s photographs document the colourful remnants of her anonymous performances of sewing torn seats on buses throughout Bogotá. Juan Manuel Echavarría’s video records the songs composed by country dwellers displaced by violent events and massacres fuelled by the international drugs trade. Juan Pablo Echeverri’s passport-photos are visual documents of his daily visits from 18 April to 15 June 08. -- www.photonet.org.uk
