New York Giants Hold Emotional Team Meeting Before Super Bowl

The Giants held an emotional and memorable team meeting last night on the eve of Super Bowl XLII. - By Michael Eisen, Giants.com

It began with a 2½-minute highlight video of the team’s postseason victories over Tampa Bay, Dallas and Green Bay. The music that accompanied the video was “Good Riddance” (“The Time of Your Life”) by Green Day.

The team’s emotional inspiration, Lt. Colonel Greg Gadson, spoke for approximately five minutes. Gadson, who lose both his legs while serving in Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated under his vehicle, first met the Giants in Week 3 in Washington – where they overcame a 14-point halftime deficit to earn their first victory of the season. Gadson was also with the Giants in Tampa Bay and was an honorary captain for the NFC Championship Game two weeks ago. He spoke about pride, poise, team and having a belief in each other.

Then it was Tom Coughlin’s turn to speak. Coughlin told the players he sincerely hoped they feel like they are having the time of their life. And for the first time, he shared his personal feelings about what it meant to him when he was an assistant coach on the Giants team that upset the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV at the conclusion of the 1990 season. He told the players what it feels like to be world champion and how that feeling is shared with your parents, your spouses, your grandparents, your children. Coughlin also told them he wanted to win today so they and their families could feel what he felt back in January 1991.

Coughlin also told them they had earned the right to experience that and that they deserved to experience that.
